Double-action hinges

A double action hinge allows a door or gate to open in either direction, swinging both inward and outward from the hinge point. It contains bearings on both sides of the hinge plates that allow rotation in both directions. Double action hinges were developed in the early 19th century for doors required to open based on prevailing winds or other considerations. They remain commonly used today on gates where flexibility of opening is required, such as garden gates that may open for both pedestrian and vehicular access.
